Wellbeing

A core component for successful Student Engagement is Wellbeing. Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development, and are optimised by safe, supportive and respectful learning environments. Schools share this responsibility with the whole community. At St Colman's we draw on a range of resources to develop and nurture wellbeing in our community.

Christian Meditation

At St Colman’s all classes participate in Christian Meditation during Religion time. This time for contemplation is not about entering another place, but rather about entering more fully into the ordinary and discovering the absolute wonder of it, the presence of God.

Zones of Regulation

A Framework to foster self regulation and emotional control

Zones of Regulation provides students with the language they need to name their feelings

The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, explosive behaviour, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.

The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions, however one has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.

The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.

The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.

To assist students to manage their needs when in each of these zones, access is provided to a range of sensory tools. These tools are designed to be used for short bursts to meet the emotional and behavioural needs of students so they can move back into the optimal learning zone - Green.
