Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is comprehensive, well resourced and needs based, aimed to grow from each child's knowledge and ability base. Teaching and learning exists in the context of our Catholic, Christian Traditions nurturing the whole child and their potential.

Faith

The school works closely with the Parish.  Whole school Masses are celebrated at least once per term. We complement and support  the Parish's Sacramental Programme.  The whole school participates in the School Prayer Assembly on Mondays at 8.40am.

Arts

Music is an important part of the schools programme with  weekly music lessons under a qualified music teacher. The children of St Colman's School have maintained a fine tradition of participation in the annual Burdekin Junior Eisteddfod  and have enjoyed a great deal of success over the years.  All children compete in at least one item with their class while some also choose to compete in individual items.  Class and group items include choral speaking, singing and small plays.  Educational Tours and camps are seen as an excellent way of reinforcing various areas of learning.  Though these experiences may vary from year to year and teacher to teacher, the following list may give some idea of excursions taken.  Prep - Half or Full Day Excursion; Year 1/2/3 - Full Day Excursion; Year 4/5 - 2 or 3 Day Camp; Year 6/7 - 3 to 5 Day Camp

Physical Education

All classes take part in an exercise and skills programme. The purpose of this is to build up the children's fitness and co-ordination as well as improving skills such as throwing, catching, and bouncing.  Children in years 5-6 participate in the Interschool Sports Competition with other schools in the Burdekin.  These sports include  Modern League/Touch, Soccer, Cricket, Basketball  for boys and  Softball, Touch, Netball, Basketball for girls.  Fun Runs, interhouse athletics and swimming carnivals are highlights of our athletic year where all children can participate.  St Colman's School has two sports houses - Blue - Leichhardt and Yellow - Wickham. We also go on to participate against other  primary schools in the Burdekin District in Cross Country Runs, Swimming and Athletics Carnivals.
